i used to think you were an amazing artist, then i realised you have one of the most limited ranges in expression/character build/pose e.t.c. i've ever seen. still, it sells.

[identity profile] hallo-katzchen.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right. I'm quite aware of that now, and I'm trying to do my best to change that :3

(Anonymous) 2008-04-22 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
All of your male characters look the same, barring when you draw Nathan. And even then any brute-ish character you draw looks like Nathan. It's become frustrating, because you have an immense talent and yet you keep churning out essentially the same drawing over and over, or pandering to the grunts of OOO PENIS OMG from most y! commenters. You're better than this. When I first started watching your LJ, I was stunned by your talent. Especially in your female drawings, the woman with dreads comes to mind as well as the mermaid character. They looked *amazing*. And then suddenly every drawing is Skwisgaar, even when the character supposedly isn't Skwisgaar.

A while ago someone posted on fandom secrets that they hope you do not break into their fandoms. I regret to admit that I now feel the same.

[identity profile] hallo-katzchen.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
At least you don't think Nate looks like Skwiss ;)

But yeah. I have to agree that my style is repetitive. I'm practicing more and I'm trying new things in hopes of changing it up.

And I do apologize for messing up the fandom. It was never my intent, but I just got carried away with it. And sadly that put a lot of people off, and I feel guilty about that.

(Anonymous) 2008-04-22 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You are emotionally manipulative online and what you did to her was heartless.

[identity profile] hallo-katzchen.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I know. And I'm sorry.

Like I said, I fucked up royally because I thought I was doing the right thing by telling her what she wanted to hear in order to make her feel better. But I went about it wrong and made promises I couldn't keep.

I know it's probably way too late now to say this, but I've been sorry ever since that day.

I think that your art style is extremely monotonous and it's getting rather boring. I don't doubt that you have talent, though.

[identity profile] hallo-katzchen.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
My comments in this entry are getting a bit repetitive too *lol*

Like I've said before, I'm trying to improve and inject some variety in my work without losing my style. And hopefully come to a happy medium between myself and the people who watch, so we can both be happy about it.

It's been really interesting to see how fandom people at first all loved you beyond all belief, but later on it turned out that a bunch of them apparently really hate you. While I'll admit that I've been irked by some of your character portrayals and the frequent repetitiveness, I think most of those people were being petty douchebags. Ohhhh no someone drew a character in a way I didn't like, now I must have a personal vendetta against them! I don't know, you've always seemed nice enough to me. I'm probably not in a great position to judge, though, since I don't know you that well and we haven't really interacted much. I can tell that recently you've been making a conscious effort to try and improve your style and do different things with it, and I commend you for that.

[identity profile] hallo-katzchen.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that kinda came as a shock to me. It hurt at first. But I was cool with it because people are entitled to their opinions just as much as I'm entitled to have a laugh at my own expense (i.e. the I Ruin Fandoms pic @ DA) But apparently, having a giggle at yourself translates as "butthurt" to some.

Looking back on things, I agree with you on the way I portray the guys, but I feel what I've done is no worse than what anyone else has done in the fandom.

But I apologize for it anyway, and I am making an effort to change what I do. I just wish it were under better circumstances via constructive criticism, or telling me out in the open, instead of the events that occured.

(Anonymous) 2008-04-22 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I find it kind of interesting that yours is the only journal where I've seen this meme posted where the majority of the comments risked actually being critical/honest. And I wonder if that's because you seem to have a decent sense of self-esteem/ability to take criticism, or maybe you're just more known and so more people are commenting. I've resisted being entirely honest in the other journals, for fear of causing distress to certain paper-thin egos ( that's not a dig at anyone - all fangirls tend to have paper-thin egos, as a general rule).

My honest comment to you, regarding your work, is this: It took a while for your art style to grow on me, but it has quite a lot. I don't agree with your visual representation/interpretation of the Dethklok characters in some ways, but your style reminded me vaguely of Aeon Flux when I first saw it (God knows why, and that isn't an insult), so I kept looking and I do like that it's a style that is distinct without being derivative of, say, Japanese manga. That is, I enjoy looking at it, even when I'm not agreeing with it. Which is unusual for me. Although I admit that I also like your women more than your men, most of the time, and for some reason sometimes when you draw the Metalocalypse characters as women, I recognize more of their personality-from-the-show in them than when you draw them regularly. I have no idea why that is.

While I can see where people are coming from when they say that your stuff is often repetitive, I applaud your ability to be consistent. Most amateur artists/fanartists aren't, myself included. Because we know what your Skwisgaar looks like, we instantly recognize him in a picture - no matter what position or part of him the picture is of. That kind of consistency takes discipline - and requires drawing a character over and over again. Which is pretty repetitive, and why so few artists accomplish it.

Personally and non-fanart related, I have enjoyed exchanges with you and I think you're a clever and interesting girl. There's a lot I think I'd like to know about you.

[identity profile] hallo-katzchen.livejournal.com 2008-04-22 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
They're probably being more critical/honest because I can take a hit *lol* I've been taking them IRL for quite a while, so the internet is no worry :3

You're right to say that you can see a bit of Aeon Flux in my art (no offense taken at that, btw) because Peter Cheung is one of my many influences.

And you're right about art being consistent. Skwisgaar (or anyone else I draw) would look odd if I drew him differently each and every time. Modernist!Skwisgaar in one pic, Pre-Raphaelite!Skwisgaar in the next wouldn't really add up after a while. Besides, he and the rest of the characters look the same in every episode (with the exception of the occasional wardrobe change) So why not have that carry over into fanart?

And like I've said before, my art gets to be repetitive because there are certain poses/situations I like to draw a character in because that's what I enjoy. But I forgot to keep in mind that not everyone likes what I like, so I ended up flooding a fandom with things I found appealing without really thinking about other people. I'm not gonna lie when I say I feel bad about that.

And I'm glad you like the women I draw, even though I don't dwell on the female form as much as I should *makes a note to draw more girls*

And hey. Drop me a note if you wanna know me ^^

I have been stunned by your talent and your skill at drawing. I can't understand why people think you are repetitive. Your style is [b]your style[/b]. Draw what your muses and your heart says, not what a small group of asshats say you should draw.

I've been blown away by all of your art, your Dethklok stuff and your original characters. I've been a myth and legends fan for a long time and those beings are just amazing to me.

I also find you are an amazing person. Yeah, you have made mistakes with some people, but you aren't the only one at fault. Each side has to take responsibility for her or his own actions.

I am proud to say I know you. I hope you consider me a friend as much as I consider you a friend. And I hope one day to meet you in person.

Erk. Sorry. Didn't realize this was supposed to be anonymous and I don't know how to do that, so I erased my comment. But I still stand by it.

(Anonymous) 2008-04-22 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I admit, when I first entered the fandom, I didn't like your art much. I never thought it was awful, it just wasn't my cup of tea. But I would see it again here and there, and it started to grow on me. Now you're one of my favorite artists in the fandom (and period). True, in some of your earlier work the characters did bear some strong resemblances to each other, and I've noticed in your more recent work those resemblances are more and more diminshed. I must say, while I liked your earlier work, I LOVE your stuff over the last few months. Like the person said before me, you have a definite stlye and you worked at it; and yeah, when you're honing a style, you're going to get some stuff that looks pretty similar. Repetition is essential to the process. But you're not afraid to branch out, try new things, and notice things that need improvement. I really respect you for that.

That being said, there is NOTHING so horrendous about your art that justifies the way those people treated you. They were petty. They were jealous. And they just could not stand it that you took it so well and had a sense of humor about it. Dear, you have done NOTHING to "ruin the fandom," and you should not have to apologize for it. Fandom isn't ruined by pictures of guys with big cocks, it's ruined by wankers. I applaud you for how well you've handled the whole situation.

And in non-fandom related issues, I don't know you very well, but from what I do, you seem like a very talented, kind, and interesting person. I hope someday I can get to know you better.

Also, your Chicklok stuff owns my soul. That is all.

Heia Hallo. I see the big brave flamers have shown up. Fascinating how they move in packs and hide behind f-locked journals. Personally if I have something to say, I say it. But then I'm all grown up and can handle myself. Must be different for children, who are limited to stomping their feet and waving their dollies.

Your art is gorgeous. I love the fluidity of the lines, and the way you capture emotion. I saw that picture you did of Skwisgaar playing guitar with his headphones on, and I adored it. It seemed so peaceful. I keep hoping you'll illustrate something of mine, but I'm too shy to ask, because I know how hard it is to create art. But if you ever get the urge, I'll be honoured. ::Hugs.::

I cannot sit idly by and be called a fucking coward. This was an anonymous meme meant to be anonymous, and offering constructive criticism is far from flaming. Just because I wasn't fucking licking Hallo's feet doesn't make my opinions any less valid.

I know nothing about you personally, so all I have to go on is that I love your artwork.
I like your style, and I like that it is distinct. I've never seen anyone else draw characters the way you do. Especially on Y!Gallery, where 80% of the submissions are cute-sy anime, overandoeverandoverandover.

As to the rest of these comments, I find it odd that people would complain.
[sarcasm] Gee, all your art is done in your style? ::GASP:: What a concept! You should totally be drawing in other people's styles! [/end sarcasm]

Oh, yeah. And pick Una's mate, dammit XP

I have been in love with your art since the first time I saw it. I was always amazed at how well you could draw, how effortless you could create your art. I am sorry for all of the back stabbers who came out of the wood work to hurt you. I can name a few now just by what they say and how they say it. In fact I think I could name each and every one of them who posted here. They all are wankies, I hope that you don't give up because of them. You have so many people who like what you do and it should matter that you make a ton of people happy versus the handful of assholes that don't have anything better to do than ruin a fandom. Yeh, they ruin fandoms, not you.

(Anonymous) 2008-04-23 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I love your art. As far as I can tell, if the lineart alone is interesting to look at, then it's good. I can say this anonymously without sounding like a kiss-ass. Update more. >:I

[identity profile] nickeldeuce.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to preface this with the fact that I'm not going to leave an anonymous comment. Also, I actually didn't just sniff this out myself; I was pointed here by people who, I assume, thought I would remain anonymous and flame you. I'm not like that, however.

First of all, I would like to say that I've never had anything against you personally. I've never said anything negatively about you. I mean, unless you count that dA comment I said about that one drawing seeming a little bit like fishing for compliments, but I honestly never meant anything malicious by it; I was just stating my opinion. I would never judge someone I didn't know on a personal level, because, for all I know, you could be the sweetest person ever. You could also be the worst person ever, but my point is, I don't know you, so I'm not going to say anything either way.

Of course, I'm not really the hugest fan of your art. I'm sure you know that. But I will say that there are a few pictures of the SNB boys that I do have favourited on dA, because I do really like them. I've never said anything about your art that was just mindless flaming. In my opinion, your dicks are pretty out of proportion. And there's something funny about the way you draw hands, also, that I think you might need to work on, and you also do seem to draw every one of your guys pretty much exactly the same. Is any of that flaming? If it is, I guess I just have a different opinion on what constitutes flaming... However, I have never once said that you didn't have a definite style or that you had no talent. Because you definitely do have talent. And I think if you maybe got over trying to please everyone else with your fanart and just thought about what you, personally, would like, you could maybe be really fantastic.

There is something I do disagree with, though. I don't know if you're aware of the way your (I'm tempted to say lackeys, but that would constitute you having recruited them, and I don't think you did), I will say, personal army of fans treat people, but if you are... I'm extremely disappointed that you allow them to behave that way in your name. The fact that it seems like you allow them to go around smearing lies and trying to ruin people's friendships in the name of your art is pretty hard for me to accept. However, I'm going to err on your side and assume that you didn't know that they would stoop to such a level. Just saying.

I know I'm probably going to get attacked for this comment, and people are going to say that I'm just trying to cause drama, but I'm not. If I was, I would make this comment anonymous and hide behind the cowardice of anonymity. As it were, I respect you as a fellow human being too much to make petty comments at you in hiding. I take responsibility for my actions, which is a lot more than a lot of people who've made claims against me can say.

Well, if you say that the way Hallo draws dicks is out of proportion, then you haven't seen some of the photos I've seen. Yeah, pre-PhotoShop in the bad old days of no internet and PCs.

And you say you aren't going to slander people and yet you do it.

Excuse me, but unless it's been in posts I haven't read, I have seen nowhere that any friend of Hallo has tried to "ruin people's friendships" or "go around smearing lies".

I have defended the general Metalocalypse fandom from people who anonymously smear it on Fandom!Secrets. But seeing as it's nameless on the posters part (I post openly), I have no idea who I'm talking about and I am polite. Trust me, I can be way worse. I have never named names, though there have been times I guess at who was posting and wanted to.

Oh, and just so you know, this is not an attack on you or anyone else.

I like to pretend I'm cool and dodge the anon option too. XD

Anyway, I'm obviously a fan of your works,(why the hell else would I be watching your journal? Haha..) but what I like about you more is your open mindedness toward critique and criticism. It says a lot about the artist if they're willing to hear negative opinions about their work, and even more when they keep said opinions in mind when trying to improve. I can identify when people say that your work has a repetitive nature, since I've struggled with the same issues in my drawings, and it makes me happy to see you attempt to change that.

Admittedly, I could care less for cartoon erotica, but all your other compositions are always a treat to see. You make such confident lines when you draw. I bet you'd do really well with a brush.

Nnnyeah. That's about all I got.

[identity profile] deddybear.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 03:08 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] madamwindmill.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
O hay, no anon here!

I have always liked your art. I think sometimes the proportions are a little wonky (i.e. the feet sometimes seem too large), but I figure that your artistic interpretation is a work in progress, so I don't care. I really, really like your DethGrrls, and I wish you'd draw Pickles more! Sometimes I think Skwiss' nose gets a little out-of-control (hee), but since I am so in awe of anyone who can create what you do, it doesn't matter. I would love it if you drew more casual moments. Oh, and sometimes Toki is too cutesy, but that's a common theme in Dethklok art, it seems.

About The Situation With A Friend of Mine: it's obviously none of my business, and I'm not going to judge you OR her over it, but I do hope everyone has learned from the experience. It sucks to be the hurtee OR the hurter.

Heya Hallo, not gonna be an Anon here.
I'm one of your many watchers from dA, and I'm usually too paranoid to respond to some of your entries, but now I have a good chance to say, that, you really inspire me.
You're one of the few artists out there that really inspire me to pick up a pencil and dish out my own works. I have a long road to travel down when it comes to art, and I usually like to refer to some of your drawings to help me out(mainly for hands).
I'm sure there's quite a few people out there that don't like your works, but I'm one of the people that do. You have your own distinctive style, and amazing linework I can recognize anywhere. I really hope you can continue doing what you do best. I always feel awesome when I check my messages and there's a new deviation from you.

I don't know you personally, but it seems some of your fans are being really bitey over the issue of whether someone agrees with your art or not.

But you yourself are not being bitey, and your awareness that you need to improve, as well as that not everyone loves your art, is something to be commended. It shows that you've got ALOT more brains and maturity than to fall into the trap of becoming the Metalocalypse fandom's Snapesnogger :D

[identity profile] shina-amalgam.livejournal.com 2008-04-23 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
No need to be anon here. If I have something to say to someone, I want to say it directly. (though the anon factor is necessary in some cases, I believe)

I love your style! It is very original. Yes, I am one of those (apparently) lame anime fanatics that loves all anime style art, but before that, I was all about American comic book style. Your style is just so YOU. That's not something many artists can boast these days (not even me T__T).

I don't think that being repetitive is bad (cause honestly, I know from experience that it is VERY difficult). I don't think your ruining any fandom (because fandoms exist for the reason of expressing your unique love of characters and such). People are entitled to their opinions, but honestly, sometimes I think they take the fandoms just a tad bit too seriously. When I get a nasty or silly comment on some fan art I've done, I usually just chuckle about it (cause they get sooo worked up about the silliest stuff!), and move on with my day.

Let's see...can I offer any constructive crit? Hmmm...only thing I can think of is making your females a little softer. You draw absolutely *amazing* muscle tone *is jealous*, but sometimes the women end up looking just slightly masculine. (Though your Chicklok art ROCKS MY WORLD!!! so, no complaints there) Truthfully, though, I love all of your art just fine the way it is! <3
